What is Merchant Capture?
Merchant Capture, in its most simple terms, is a service which allows a user to scan checks and monetary instruments (e.g., traveler’s checks or money orders) and transmit the scanned images to a credit union for posting and clearing. Through Merchant Capture, business customers use an existing PC, web-based software, and a certified scanner to image-capture check payments at their business location and – over a secure Internet connection – electronically deliver the images and MICR information to their credit union for deposit into their account(s). Since there is not a separate PC to purchase, Merchant Capture can also be used by smaller credit unions unable to make the initial investment required for Branch Capture.


How Does Merchant Capture Work?
Using a PC, scanner, and an Internet connection, daily checks received at your member’s business can be scanned and sent electronically for deposit at your credit union. Specifically, as checks are received and batched at your member’s business, an operator (at the business) logs in to Merchant Capture (branded ezcapture) and turns on the scanner. The operator places a batch of checks into the check scanner feeder and clicks the "Start Scan" button. As the system captures the checks, it creates check images, validates image quality, determines the check amount, verifies the routing/transit number, analyzes the check data to determine possible duplication, and determines if the check is a foreign item. Following the capture of the items, the operator is prompted to key in any check amounts that were unable to be read. If necessary, the batch is then balanced by deleting or inserting items, or by correcting the deposit total. Once the batch is balanced with the control total, it can be submitted electronically to the credit union for approval. For research purposes, reports and a history of transmitted checks are also stored within the application for a period of 30 days. However, ALL images are available to member credit unions for a period of seven (7) years through Access
Image-NET.

in-person deposits (thereby reducing workload and required staffing), and reduces the cost and volume of paper associated with physically mailing or depositing checks or monetary instruments. By eliminating the need for business members to physically transport checks to the credit union for deposit, your credit union can build stronger relationships and expand its geographic reach and market share. Similar to Branch Capture, the software checks for duplicate and rejected items, provides the merchant or credit union with reporting capabilities, and improves availability of funds.
